DigiTalk disinformation

09 March 2026 Media

Has truth become irrelevant?

Disinformation seems to be increasingly influencing public debate. But how significant is its impact really? And are our institutions sufficiently resilient to it?

During the first edition of the DigiTalk, Daniëlle Arets (Lecturer in Journalism at Fontys) and Nick van Apeldoorn (Research Coordinator at BUAS) discussed this with two experts who deal with these issues on a daily basis. In the Fontys studio, Jelle Postma (Justice for Prosperity) and Vincent Leemans (deputy editor-in-chief at DPG Media Nederland) discussed the role of disinformation in our society.

The discussion focused on how disinformation is increasingly being used strategically to influence public opinion – for example, via social media, political campaigns or international information operations. At the same time, the panel discussed how difficult it can be to distinguish fact from fiction.

The role of journalism and social institutions was also extensively discussed. How do editorial teams recognise disinformation? What responsibility do the media have in identifying and correcting it? And are our democratic institutions sufficiently prepared for an information environment in which truth is increasingly being questioned?
