Press release: New public/private ICAI research lab with MasterMinds

02 July 2021

MindLabs recently joined the national Innovation Centre for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI). This makes Tilburg one of the eight locations with an ICAI lab. Together with the partners in the MasterMinds project, MindLabs will collaborate in this public/private research lab, named MasterMinds AI Lab. The MasterMinds AI Lab is one of the many initiatives within MindLabs and focuses on the development and evaluation of new technologies in which the cross-fertilisation between artificial minds and human minds is central.

Artificial Intelligence and human behaviour
The ICAI is a national collaboration between various universities, companies and the Dutch government with 27 labs located in eight locations. The goal is to keep the Netherlands at the forefront of AI through the development of knowledge and talent. MasterMinds collaborates on PhD research where robotics and avatars, serious gaming, decision making, and virtual and augmented reality intersect. The results of these studies are applied to realise AI solutions for the benefit of society.

Professor Max Louwerse, Scientific Director of the MasterMinds AI Lab: "The future of AI increasingly lies at the interface between artificial intelligence and human behaviour. The MasterMind project works at this interface to develop new technologies and apply them immediately. This is entirely in the nature of MindLabs."

Five MasterMinds projects
The MasterMinds project consists of five innovative research projects, aimed at developing breakthroughs concerning interactive AI technologies. The research questions include: Can we train and improve complex decision making using serious gaming? What is the learning effect of training pilots using virtual reality? How do we effectively design AR and VR training modules? How can we develop and use intelligent tutoring systems?

The MasterMinds project brings together knowledge institutions, industrial partners and government organisations to work on AI solutions that can be used directly by the partners. The project answers questions raised by the industrial partners to prepare for the technology-driven future ahead. The project helps stimulate regional ecosystems in which SMEs play a central role in developing a resilient, sustainable and future-proof economy.

The five projects are:

  1. Using serious games in complex decision making in logistics – Port of Rotterdam
  2. Neurophysiology and VR in aviation – Royal Netherlands Air Force and MultiSIM
  3. AR & VR for maintenance – Actemium, Marel and CastLab
  4. Evidence-based prevention: predictive analytics – Interpolis and Municipality of Tilburg
  5. Virtual Reality in education – WPG Zwijsen, Spacebuzz and Timeaware

MasterMinds brings together the brightest minds in the field of artificial and human intelligence.
