Virtual Humans

At Virtual Humans, we are investigating how digital personas can contribute to the way we learn, care for others and communicate.

Duration: 2024–2027

This project explores where virtual humans can truly add value: from healthcare consultations to journalism and education. It forms part of the Midden-Brabant Regional Deal and is coordinated by MindLabs, in collaboration with partners such as Fontys University of Applied Sciences, Tilburg University, Breda University of Applied Sciences and Yonder. Researchers, industry partners and Futures Lab interns are also contributing to the development of prototypes and applications.

Main question

How can virtual humans be deployed in our society in a meaningful and responsible way?

What is a virtual human?

Virtual humans are digital personas that are becoming increasingly realistic in appearance, behaviour and interaction. Within this project, we are investigating how this technology can be applied in situations where human contact is important.

The focus is on three areas: healthcare, education and media. In doing so, we look not only at what is technically possible, but also at the human aspect. When does a conversation feel natural? When is trust established? And what role can a virtual human play in supporting people?

By combining technology with practical research, we are building applications that are not only innovative but also genuinely useful.

Approach and methodology

As part of the project, researchers and partners are developing and testing various prototypes. These are deployed in realistic situations and presented to users, for example during Dutch Design Week, which takes place annually in Eindhoven.

In this way, we investigate how people react to different forms of virtual humans: from clearly digital to those that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Futures Lab interns play an active role in this by designing and developing prototypes.

Practical examples

One example is SAM: a virtual human who helps users age healthily through conversations and practical tips. Applications are also being explored in journalism, education and the service sector. You can find out more about MindLabs’ Virtual Humans via the links below:

Expected outcomes

The project will yield new knowledge, practical insights and concrete prototypes. Work is also underway to establish a technical foundation that will enable future virtual humans to be developed more quickly and easily.

In this way, we are not only building today’s technology, but also shaping the interactions of tomorrow.
